Privacy
The short version is the whole version.
Umbra collects nothing. There is no account, no analytics, no telemetry and no server of ours for anything to be sent to.
What Umbra does on your Mac
Umbra draws a shadow over your menu bar and Dock and watches your cursor to know when to lift it. All of that happens on your Mac. Your settings — the dimming level, whichever options you have changed — are stored locally and stay there.
It is a pure background agent: no Dock icon, no window collecting things about you, nothing typed into it, nothing to sync. There is simply no data in the app to send anywhere.
The one network request, and why it is there
Umbra keeps itself up to date with Sparkle, the standard open-source updater for Mac apps, and we would rather explain exactly what that does than write “no network activity” and leave you to discover otherwise.
Periodically the app checks https://dakshgargas.com/apps/umbra/appcast.xml — a static file listing the latest version — and, when there is a new release, downloads it from GitHub releases. The requests go to this site’s host and GitHub’s servers, which see the standard metadata any web request carries: your IP address and a user agent. No identifier of yours is attached by the app — nothing about you, your Mac, or how you use Umbra travels with the request.
That is the complete list of Umbra’s network activity.
What it never asks for
- No account. There is nothing to sign into and Umbra never asks who you are — no name, no email, no personal detail of any kind.
- No analytics or crash reporting. No usage events, no counters, no third-party SDK phoning home.
- No payment. Umbra is free and open source; there is nothing to buy and no purchase data to hold.
Changes
If this policy ever changes, the date at the top changes with it. Should Umbra ever collect anything — it does not today, and there is no plan for it to — we would say so here before it happened, not afterwards.
